![]() ![]() Just like Flynn and Sam in the films, Beck finds himself whisked off to the Coliseum where he's forced to participate in high-tech, gladiatorial-like games. The action is swiftly moved to the aspect of The Grid I suspect Tron: Legacy writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who serve as executive producers on the show, believe fans were most looking forward to seeing in animated form. For another, the look of this sequence doesn't mimic anything we saw in either of the two previous films and establishes a visual style that is wholly distinctive and continuously impressive. For one thing, the mentor/protege relationship between Beck and Tron makes for an interesting character dynamic. It isn't long after that before the story moves in a different direction and the two are separated for the remainder of the episode, but I'd love to see more scenes like this in the show. Tron (Bruce Boxleitner, reprising his role from the films) only appears briefly at the beginning of the episode, as Beck's training commences with a dynamic Light Cycle race across what appears to be a rocky, alpine landscape. The story of "The Renegade" still works without that setup, but it certainly helps to understand where Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood) is coming from and his motivations for teaming up with the legendary freedom fighter Tron. But whatever your prior Tron fandom, you really should check it out before moving on to "The Renegade, Part 1." It diligently sets up the origin of the series' hero, Beck, and places the story within a specific time and place in the continuity of the Tron universe. ![]() Chances are, if you're a Tron fan and you're reading this review, you're probably already seen it. Prior to the broadcast premiere of "The Renegade, Part 1" on Thursday night, a full, half-hour introductory episode titled "Beck's Beginning" was made widely available online and aired on both Disney XD and The Disney Channel last month (you can read our review of it here). ![]() Disney's evolving release strategy for its new Tron series is a bit confusing, so a quick explanation might be in order before we get into the review of the premiere episode. Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow. ![]()
